At last week's European Navigation Conference in Naples; Lt Col David Goldstein, chief engineer for the US Air Force GPS Wing, told the plenary session; that they are experiencing some 'out of family' measurements from the latest GPS satellite and so it still had not been set active. They are working around the clock to resolve the issue and are close to identifying the cause of the problem, but a final resolution may be several months off.Significant emphasis was placed on the role of eLoran as a potential back-up to GNSS. The prospect of the introduction of widespread, GNSS-based, road-user-charging gave added incentive to thoughts of reducing the potential for spoofing related fraud. Rein van Gooswilligen, President of the European Group of Institutes of Navigation (EUGIN), announced that they would endeavour to ensure that eLoran was included in the proposed European Radio-Navigation Plan.
This position has been reinforced by the release of the US Institute of Defense Analyses - eLoran Independent Assessment, which 'unanimously recommends that the U.S. Government complete the eLoran upgrade and commit to eLoran as the national backup to GPS for 20 years'.

Herschel & Planck launched.

http://www.esa.int/esaCP/SEMK2AZVNUF_index_0.html

On May 14th, Ariane 5 rocket from Europe's Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana; successfully launched the Herschel space telescope with the largest ever space mirror aboard, towards its orbit around the second Lagrangian point, L2.On the same launch vehicle was the Planck background radiation mapper, which will probe radiation left over from light emitted shortly after the Big Bang

FIDIS urges mobile users to be aware of data disclosure

http://www.fidis.net/home/single-news/article/press-release-fidis-urges-mobile-users-to-be-aware-of-data-disclosure/back/4/

Research from Future of Identity in the Information Society highlights the information many of us may unknowingly give away on a day-to-day basis.

The Guardian blog: Is GPS really 'too big to fail'?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2009/may/19/gps-satnav-breakdown

Blog from Bobbie Johnson, The Guardian's technology correspondent about the future of GPS.
